Dawning Creations

I hear this noise
every time my eyes open,
every time I rouse from under my covers.
Every time I take a step,
I hear this noise.

I suck the air into my lungs and hear this noise.
Raspy and more raucous than a car horn.
I can never block out this sound.

It comes from deep inside,
shakes my core
and drowns my eardrums.
Music doesn’t silence it.
Talking won’t silence it,
nor will ear plugs.

I’ve had this cough for over a week now.
I hope it will soon leave me,
and I will hear this awful sound no more.
