This was unexpected.

The swelling yellow jacket sting on my arm, a precursor.

A warning of things to come. Oblivious to the sting, I stayed close to your flower bed.
We were shooting the breeze, talking by the flowers amongst the bees.
We were talking about sales and memories, like the memories with
little Katie and Jack.

The bumblebees wove around us as I listened to your stories.

I didn’t know it then, but maybe some part of me did. This was the last conversation we would ever have.

It wasn’t until that night that I felt the burning itching of the yellowjacket sting.

Then, a few weeks later, you were gone.
Yours was the goodbye I never had expected.

You were an eccentric person but loving.
You were real and solid.
You were a woman who struggled and fought your way through life.
Your arm was outstretched for anyone to take ahold.
I hope I reached you, a few times.

John said it right, I’m sure you did reach her. Poignant, heartfelt and constructed with care and skill, this is a wonderful tribute.
