Setting sun,
only 4 p.m.
On the road,
blinded by the blood orange autumn sun.

The country road was immaculate,
as I was crunching leaves under tires
Autumn staying predictable as could be.
Everything was as it should be.

Until…

Suddenly, I felt the atmosphere
shifting under tires.
The red barn becoming monstrously large,
the colors melting into the sky.
The tiny hairs on my arms lifting.

The moon spared me the eerie
shape shifting above me before long.
The night was coming on strong.

A creature stumbled onto the road,
fur on edge
It’s eyes were wide, expressionless, hollow.
It stared me down with fervor and ferocity

My heart began quaking
fingers curling
hands shaking

I tapped the brake pedal,
still keeping my eyes fixed to it’s

How could something so adorable
be so terrifying

It’s gaze stung my eyes,
it’s weight heavy and daunting.
It raised it’s back and staggered on,
stopping dead in the center of the road

My whole body felt frozen.
The hollow void seemed pleading.
I swerved to avoid striking it.

I cranked up the heat,
holding my jacket closely with my free hand.

What had I just seen ?

Reminds me of the first time I saw a raccoon with I believe, rabies. I was going home and I saw a raccoon walking like a zombie in the the middle of the road. I actually pulled up and stopped right beside it and it creepily turned it’s whole body and looked up at me.

It kept walking, I don’t recommend anyone do this, but I got out and followed it lol! 🤦‍♂️ it didn’t seem scared of me and it didn’t seem violent or hurt. It was just aimlessly wandering like a zombie. It finally walked up in the woods and I left.

Yes, that’s how this one was. It was so heartbreaking but terrifying too. The way it’s empty eyes stared me down. It felt like it wanted me to hit it. I could never do that obviously. But that’s the feeling I got . It was so terrifying. I still get goosebumps talking about it. But writing it down was a good release. I’m sorry you experienced something like that too

Well, they’re cute until you corner one. Then they show a fairly not cute attitude lol!

I love the final line! It calls into question the story told so powerfully in the poem and gives the reader space to feel.

Thank you, coming from you that means a lot. I have been checking out your site more, again. Your writing is astronomical, out of this world 🙂 thank you so much . I hope you’re having a good week Jaya. The crazy part about this post is that this actually happened and still scares me to this day
